What to expect at Central Victorian Oncology
During your initial consultation, your Medical Oncologist will review your medical history to formulate a personalised treatment plan for your specific type of cancer. This will take into consideration any other relevant medical conditions too. With specialised training in managing your type of cancer, your Oncologist will provide a detailed explanation of the proposed treatment, which may involve additional tests or scans to tailor the approach.
Treatment options are highly varied and tailored to what you need. The broad types are chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy and of course other care such as blood transfusions etc as required. Cancer treatments are also given through a drip (intravenous), under the skin (subcutaneous) or as a tablet. If you need radiotherapy, this will be explained in conjunction with a Radiation Oncologist. You may also be the option of your voluntary participation in clinical trials. You'll receive comprehensive information about your treatment plan, and you're encouraged to bring a supportive companion to your appointments.
For your first visit, please bring a list of your medications and details of other medical professionals involved in your care. If your treatment involves the Chemotherapy Unit, the dedicated chemo nurses at St. John of God Bendigo will also provide some really useful education. At your first treatment appointment you will also receive contact information of who to call if you are unwell or need advice.
Please feel free to address any questions or concerns with your Oncologist — no question is too small.
